OMG there are hundreds of them. really! and that is just in the garage, there are hundreds more on the eaves and porch and more in the carport and storage place. We usually eat our meals outside this time of year and well, that won't be happening now. I had to move a dozen this morning so I could put my plate down and sit in my chair.
And YEAH! The squash glut is over and it is totally tomato and cucumber season. I had planted early girl, better boy, bradley, cherokee purple, roma and a german queen tomato. No German Queens are ripe yet but the rest are booming. Cherokee Purples are my very favorite. They are huge and ugly and purple and green and really juicy and sweet. Bradleys are Doyle's fave. We have been having Bruschetta with tomatoes & basil and goat cheese a few of times a week. I can make a whole meal of that. I just put in a leftover tomato plant that I am hoping will start and keep producing later in the season. Can't remember the variety at the moment, but it was a popular heirloom variety.....It'll come to me later today I guess. There are lots of cucumbers too. yummm
I cleaned up a bit at the square foot garden. Pulled out the beans and, picked the cabbage, and gave up on the lonely hopeless little eggplant. I will be putting in Swiss chard in some places, but some things are just too crowded and I will leave spaces. Not gonna bother with green beans again. Not enough come in at the same time to make a decent mess of beans. Cabbage is out too. It takes a lot of space and I can buy a head of it at the farmer's market for a dollar or two - way cheaper than the plants originally were. I will be planting greens and possibly peas next month. The beets are getting bigger. I recently discovered that I really can't eat them much, so I have been letting them hang out in the garden and using the greens some. But with this heat that is about over. Maybe I can pickle the beets and tolerate them better that way. The carrots ought to come out too. Not sure they are worth the trouble either. The blue potatoes I put in as an experiement will be back. I have pulled up some of them and they were really delicious.
